About IMPERIAL TOPAZ

The highly prized “imperial topaz” is an intense golden to reddish-orange color and is found primarily in Ouro Preto, Brazil. More commonly, topaz is colorless to pale blue or yellow.

The ‘emperor’ of Topazes and one of the world’s most coveted rare gemstones, Imperial Topaz was named in honor of Brazilian Emperor Dom Pedro and combines imperial (yellow-orange-pink) hues with a soft velvety brilliance. Another popular legend links this gem with the power of Imperial Russia; the name being apparently coined as a result of Brazilian Topaz decorating the jewelry of Tsarinas.

ources of Imperial Topaz can be found only in few locations around the world, with some locations being more abundant than others.

✶ The leading source of Imperial Topaz can be found in Brazil, where deposits are located near a village called Ouro Preto. This precious gemstone has been mined since the early 19th century, making it one of the oldest known sources.

✶ Minas Gerais is a region located in the southeastern part of Brazil, known for its rich mineral deposits which first attracted prospectors during colonial times. Today, Minas Gerais continues to be one of the main sources for imperial topaz gemstones in the world.

✶ Other notable sources include Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan but these countries do not produce Imperial Topaz in great quantities as compared to Brazil’s production levels. In recent years, new sources have been discovered including Mexico, Madagascar and Sri Lanka where good quality imperial topazes are found in abundance.

Value of the gem is extreme to match it's rarity.

More On Appraisal Certificates

Appraisal Certificates are done from accredited appraisers and represent the retail insurance replacement value for an item. While many companies do appraisals (such as jewelry stores), it is important to receive an appraisal by a group that does not involve themselves in the buying or selling of Gems or jewelry pieces as to avoid any conflict of interest. We typically use AGL or GS Labs (Gemscan), accredited appraisal companies (with Global Offices) for the Jewelry industry, located in downtown Toronto. We also have a number of Certificates from EGL a global appraisal company to the gem industry whose Toronto offices have since closed down.

An appraisal will assign a monetary value to a Gem or piece of jewelry and is ultimately subjective based on the appraiser's criteria for grading and experience. For this reason, only accredited and experienced appraisers are used to evaluate stones. An appraisal is not an indication of your buying power, that depends on your ability to "wheel and deal" as well as your source of supply and ability to buy in parcel lots or in bulk.

GS allows you to check Appraisal cert numbers online.
